Stable finances and a plan to balance them, to relieve tension in the country and to implement social policies that the public expects were some of the actions that Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov enumerated as priorities for the newly elected cabinet when it took office. At the transfer of power ceremony in the Council of Ministers headquarters the Prime Minister emphasized the cabinet’s first tasks and underscored that he does not expect “to be left at peace in the first 100 days” – an idea that, as he put it, is now a thing of the past.
“Our task is, in good synergy of the different political entities that are parties to the coalition agreement, to harness the state machinery to achieve the political goals and priorities that are underlying our agreement and that will be the government program’s groundwork,” Mr. Jeliazkov said. The Prime Minister stressed that next month the cabinet will make public its government program that will set out, in addition to goals and priorities, specific policies and programs and their assured funding. “Nothing is more important at present than the assurance for the people that the central government will address the problems of the population, with visible parliamentary support,” Mr. Jeliazkov said further.
“The outgoing caretaker government is satisfied with the work done; we worked for the sake of the national interest and the interest of the Bulgarian citizens while we abided by the Constitution and the laws of the country,” said Dimitar Glavchev, head of the caretaker government. As part of what was accomplished while his government was in office, he stressed the continuation of Bulgaria’s European path, the country’s full accession to the Schengen area and the date fixed for Bulgaria’s OECD membership. In addition, he noted that within several days Bulgaria is expected to meet the last fourth criterion of eligibility for the Eurozone. “A regular government in office is a way to resolve the political crisis and to have a cabinet that enjoys political support that we did not get,” Mr. Glavchev said further and wished every success to the new government.
