Prime Minister Andrey Gurov: Energy infrastructure is of strategic importance for competitiveness and security within EU

10.03.2026

Energy infrastructure is of strategic importance for the European Union and its upgrading and integration are among the leading European priorities. Power grids – their effective development and interoperability within the Union – are important for both – for boosting the competitiveness of the EU and for ensuring long-term energy security. This stance was voiced by Prime Minister Andrey Gurov in Paris where, upon an invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, he attended a meeting of leaders on the European approach to nuclear power and electric power transmission networks.

Prime Minister Andrey Gurov appreciated the EU’s efforts regarding this matter while he noted the importance of regional connectivity and the development of energy corridors. In the Prime Minister’s understanding, cross-border interconnections, optimum use of available resources and ensured secure, flexible and steady electricity flows between member states are essential for a well-functioning European energy market. Prime Minister Andrey Gurov pointed out, inter alia, that the size of the necessary investment in the grid infrastructure requires an all-inclusive and long-term approach to financing.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Andrey Gurov emphasized the strategic importance of nuclear power, its role to ensure steady and affordable electricity supply and to achieve climate neutrality. The Prime Minister noted the country’s consistent steps taken to build new nuclear power plants. Bulgaria’s aim is to be among the first countries in Europe to install and commission AP1000-type reactors, in full compliance with international safety standards and best practices in the development of nuclear power. Also, Bulgaria considers small modular reactors as a complementary technology to its existing nuclear power plant and is actively exploring the possibilities for their implementation.
