Elections are not an expense, they are an investment in the legitimacy of power, in the trust between citizens and institutions, and in the right of every Bulgarian—regardless of where they are—to be heard. This was stated by Prime Minister Andrey Gurov at the beginning of the first meeting of the new cabinet, during which the budget framework for the preparation and conduct of the upcoming snap parliamentary elections was adopted. The allocated funds amount to €65.6 million.
Prime Minister Gurov emphasized that the expenditures are not directed toward political parties or those in power, but toward ensuring the fairness and transparency of the electoral process. He specified that the funds will be used for the remuneration of members of election commissions, for public information campaigns and trainings organized by the Central Election Commission, as well as for maintaining public order through the Ministry of Interior.
Prime Minister Gurov also highlighted the importance of video surveillance in the electoral process, the updating of voter lists, and the establishment of polling stations abroad, stressing that transparency on election day is key to public trust.
“We can save on administration. We can optimize costs, but we cannot afford to save on democracy. Our job today is to ensure the necessary resources, but also to do so with respect for every taxpayer,” Prime Minister Andrey Gurov further underlined.
