European funding invested in 2025 in Bulgaria’s economy amounts to approximately BGN 8 billion which is unprecedented in Bulgarian history. This was announced by Tomislav Donchev, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Innovation and Growth, at the opening of the cabinet sitting. The funding is under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and the Cohesion Policy.
Tomislav Donchev recalled that the third NRRP disbursement amounting to approximately EUR 1.5 billion was made on the day before to bring the funding to Bulgaria under the European Commission’s facility to about EUR 2 billion or the equivalent of just about BGN 4 billion. “This achievement stands out against the three years when no payments whatsoever were made to Bulgaria,” Tomislav Donchev explained.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the Bulgarian government managed to negotiate the REPower Chapter that is worth EUR 480 million. As he said, at the beginning of the fourth year of the NRRP implementation, the disbursements to Bulgaria amounted to BGN 1.5 billion whereas at present they amount to BGN 4.5 billion. “In 2025 alone, the funding achieved a threefold increase over the previous four years,” Tomislav Donchev said further.
In 2026, requests are to be submitted for a fourth and a fifth disbursement subject to the NRRP in an amount of approximately EUR 2.5 billion. Tomislav Donchev pointed out that work should continue at the same speed and even faster. “Most of the reforms have been carried out at the level of the Executive (the Council of Ministers) and at the level of the Legislature (the National Assembly). We continue our work to address these requirements so that we may help the next cabinets. I hope that they will receive and invest the remaining funds without any problems,” Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev said in conclusion.
