Andrey Gurov and Roberta Metsola discuss EU security, energy and economy

18.03.2026

Leading priorities on the European agenda, including security, defense, energy and economic stability were discussed by Prime Minister Andrey Gurov and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola in Brussels.

The focuses of the discussion, in the rapidly evolving geopolitical situation, were the war in Ukraine and the developments in the Middle East. The bilateral meeting noted that the current global challenges are a trial for security and international order. In this context, an agreed and coordinated approach by the member states was seen as a sine qua non to ensure an effective response to growing risks and to strengthen the European Union’s defense.

Andrey Gurov and Roberta Metsola agreed that developments in the Middle East should not divert valuable resources from Ukraine and the European Union reiterates its unwavering support for Ukraine.

The Prime Minister and the President of the European Parliament stated firmly that the situation in the Middle East calls for an even greater need for stronger cooperation between and among the member states. The protection of the citizens in the region continues to be a top priority. The need for joint efforts to ensure international maritime shipping routes and to prevent risks to trade and energy supplies was noted. It was emphasized, among other things, that the EU’s economic stability requires joint action to curb negative impacts on markets and on the investment environment.
