Eighty-two years stand between now and those unforgettable events when in an atmosphere of oppression, totalitarian darkness and horror Bulgarians from all walks of life – clerics, politicians, public figures and ordinary people – raised their voice to defend the right of their fellow-countrymen to live. Their voice was an emanation of kindness and humanness. This was stated by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov in his speech at the Monument to Rescue in the capital city of Sofia. Today the Prime Minister joined the March of Tolerance under the slogan “WE REMEMBER” to mark the 82nd anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews and to honor the memory of the Jews who were exterminated in the Nazi death camps.
As said by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov, today, when we must take national pride with dignity, it is important that we do not pin it as a brooch onto our national self-confidence, but display it as an example and remember the heroism, the actions and the humanism that we are so much in want of today. “Let us remember the victims, let us honor them and let us not overlook evil! Let us possess all those virtues that today make us feel proud but that also make it binding on us to act correctly, to act like human beings,” Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov said in conclusion.
