Bulgaria will continue to be a constructive, predictable and reliable partner to achieve the European Union’s common goals and priorities. It is an honor for me to work together with the President of the European Council António Costa and I assure you that the Bulgarian government is a true likeminded champion for the EU’s prosperity, for peace and for upholding democratic values. This was stated by Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov after his meeting with the President of the European Council António Costa who is on a three-day visit to Bulgaria.
Today, when the EU is facing new geopolitical and economic challenges, it is extremely important to maintain our unity and to speak in one voice, Mr. Jeliazkov emphasized. Alongside, the Prime Minister expressed his confidence that the specifics of each member state would be taken into consideration and that the voice of each member state would be heard. This is of particular importance for public trust and for support for the common EU policies, the Prime Minister pointed out. Prime Minister Rossen Jeliazkov accentuated the aspiration of a number of countries to European integration and specifically emphasized free market, social commitment and rule of law as a combination unique for the EU.
The President of the European Council António Costa, for his part, recognized Bulgaria’s achievements in the process of accession to the Eurozone. So far, everyone is impressed by Bulgaria’s major progress in meeting the diverse criteria, António Costa stressed. The reports on this matter of the European Commission and of the European Central Bank are due in June. The President of the European Council expressed his hope that the reports would be positive so that a follow-up decision could be made by the European Parliament and by the Council.
In his answer to a media question concerning the European integration of the Western Balkans, António Costa noted the enormous energy that Bulgaria invested in the process during its Presidency of the Council of the EU. The enlargement towards the Western Balkans and towards Ukraine and Moldova, is the European Union’s most important geopolitical undertaking, António Costa emphasized and added that enlargement is an important issue for the whole EU.
