Prime Minister Andrey Gurov: Together with young people we look in the same direction – law abidance and fair elections

20.02.2026

Law abidance and honoring of the social contract so that the voice of people and their expectations are heard. These were the main priorities that the students who had participated in the December protests last year shared with Prime Minister Andrey Gurov at their meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office today. Together we look in the same direction and I hope that the dialog will continue, the Prime Minister said after the discussion. Andrey Gurov noted that it is not a coincidence that one of his first meetings as Prime Minister was with young people who are socially committed and name what they disagree with. They have hope and very high expectations, the Prime Minister pointed out.

Andrey Dimitrov from the NGO Red (Order) emphasized the need to hold fair elections and the role of the Ministry of Interior in that. Also, he pointed out the critical state, in his view, of the youth and sports sector. The problems are many, the suspicions of corruption are in all segments of society and the perception of justice in Bulgaria has gone down to critical levels, Andrey Dimitrov said. As he put it, the current dialog with the caretaker government is the first step towards the recovery of trust in institutions.

At last, the time has come for the authorities to hear what the public wants, to extend a hand and from now onwards let’s march together, said Alexander Tanev from the Students Against the Mafia Association. He emphasized the crisis in the Judiciary and further noted the need to organize fair and transparent elections.

Vassilena Dimitrova from the Future in Bulgaria Initiative Committee said that she is a representative of the young medical doctors who protested long time last year. In our protests we did not meet the dialog that we needed, Vassilena Dimitrova recalled. We have clearly worded proposals and changes that may materialize within the caretaker government’s term in office and that will send a message to medics that it makes sense to stay in Bulgaria and that their choice is the right choice, Dimitrova pointed out.

Today’s meeting provided an opportunity to discuss how to shorten the distance between citizens and institutions so as to encourage socially committed people, said Ivailo Madjarov from the Active Politics Association. As he put it, the upcoming elections may be the most important elections for Bulgaria, therefore it is important to have a high voter turnout.
