PRIME MINISTER BORISSOV: BULGARIA IS FOR AN EU-TURKEY DIALOGUE THAT SOLVES PROBLEMS

07.01.2018

A serious debate about the future of the European Union in the light of Brexit is on the agenda but our country will make efforts to restore the good tone and the relations of partnership between Turkey and EU member states, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said at a meeting with the President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The two discussed the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov underlined that Bulgaria is interested in normalizing the dialogue between Ankara and Brussels and will try to contribute to achieving a settlement that would rather solve than create problems.

Borissov and Erdogan, who spoke after the official ceremony for the opening of the restored Bulgarian Church “St. Stefan” in Istanbul, expressed a high appreciation for the positive dynamics between the two countries, as well as for Turkey's contribution to curbing the migratory pressure on the Bulgarian border and towards Europe. It was emphasized that the intensification of bilateral contacts at political and expert levels in recent months has stimulated the development of relations in important areas for Bulgaria and Turkey, such as agriculture, transport, and energy.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov thanked President Erdogan for his personal commitment and for the Turkish state's efforts to restore the Church. He pointed out that today's event is not just a proof of the cooperation between our countries and of the tolerance between religions, but also an example of how understanding and peace are the way to reaching progress on all issues.
